Quello che il Servizio Biblioteca del Grande Oriente d’Italia tende a dimostrare per la Gran Loggia di quest’anno, nella mostra allestita dal 5 al 7 aprile al Palacongressi di Rimini, è la centralità di questa idea nell’esperienza delle Comunioni massoniche di tutti i Paesi, e come assuma forme e contenuti diversi in ragione delle particolari evoluzioni storiche.
Non a caso, già nel 1811 all’indomani della fondazione del Grande Oriente d’Italia, prima Comunione massonica a vocazione “nazionale”, il patriota e massone Francesco Saverio Salfi nel discorso: “Dell’utilità della Franca Massoneria sotto il rapporto filantropico e morale” ammoniva come il massone dovesse sviluppare “le sue facoltà intellettuali, o morali, o meccaniche” e come “dal loro simultaneo complesso risultasse la sua piena moralità, il cui massimo grado ne costituisce la filantropia. La Massoneria deve dunque sviluppare queste facoltà per perfezionare il carattere morale e filantropico dell’uomo” e ancora, nel 1901, nel suo famoso discorso su “La Massoneria – Sua Azione – Suoi Fini” il Gran Maestro Ernesto Nathan indicava come attività fondamentale delle Logge del Grande Oriente d’Italia “una giusta, santa, solidarietà”. E del resto ancora oggi nel rituale massonico i lavori si aprono ricordando a tutti i Fratelli il motivo che li ha portati a riunirsi: “Per edificare Templi alla Virtù, scavare oscure e profonde prigioni al Vizio e lavorare al Bene ed al progresso dell’umanità”.
La carità, tra le virtù teologali, è stata uno degli elementi più rappresentativi dell’esistenza stessa della Massoneria, come dimostrano i grembiuli, il quadro di Loggia, il candelabro e il gettone di presenza della Loggia “I Discepoli di San Vincenzo de Paoli” (dedicata al santo che si prendeva cura dei bambini abbandonati) esposti nella mostra.
